KENT PLANTATION HOUSE

The Kent Plantation House is a historic plantation home located in Alexandria, Louisiana. Built in 1796, it is the oldest standing structure in Central Louisiana.

The plantation house is a two-story French Creole-style structure made of bousillage, a mixture of mud, Spanish moss, and animal hair. The house was originally built by Jean-Pierre Philemonin, a French Canadian fur trader, and has been in continuous use since it was constructed.

The house is surrounded by outbuildings, including a kitchen, a carriage house, a smokehouse, and a slave quarter, which was added in the 1840s. The house is now a museum and is open to the public for tours.

The interior of the house contains many antiques and period pieces, as well as a collection of art and artifacts from local Native American tribes, such as baskets and pottery. The grounds of the plantation are also home to a number of historic structures, including a cotton gin, a blacksmith shop, and a chapel.

The Kent Plantation House is an important part of Louisiana’s history and a popular tourist attraction. The grounds are often used for weddings and other special events, and the house is available for overnight stays. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
