The Whitley County Historical & Genealogical Society Inc. in Williamsburg, Kentucky is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the history and genealogy of Whitley County. Founded in 1992, the society works to collect, preserve and make accessible information about the county’s history, including records, photographs, artifacts, and genealogical data. The society’s primary goal is to foster an appreciation of Whitley County’s heritage, and to serve as a research center and educational resource for the public.
The society is located at the Old Whitley County Courthouse in downtown Williamsburg, and is open to the public on the second Saturday of each month from 10am to 2pm. The society’s holdings include printed materials, photographs, maps, microfilmed data, and digital files. The library is open to the public for research and genealogical inquiries, and the society’s staff is available to assist with research, answer questions, and provide guidance.
The society offers speakers and educational programs to the public, as well as a variety of publications and educational materials. The society also hosts an annual genealogical seminar and publishes a quarterly newsletter, The Whitley County Historical & Genealogical Gazette.
The society is a member of the Kentucky Historical Society and the Kentucky Genealogical Society, and is supported by memberships, donations, and other fund-raising activities. The Whitley County Historical & Genealogical Society Inc. strives to educate and inform the public about Whitley County’s history, and to preserve its heritage for future generations.
