The Lewisburg-North Logan Historical Commission Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the historical and cultural heritage of Lewisburg, Kentucky and the surrounding area. Established in 1973, the Commission has been preserving local history for over forty years.

The Commission offers a variety of programs and activities that promote and preserve the local history, including historical tours of Lewisburg and North Logan, research and publication projects, and educational programs. They also work to preserve and maintain several local historic properties, including the Lewisburg-North Logan County Courthouse, the Lewisburg-North Logan County Jail, and the former Lewisburg-North Logan County Post Office.

The Commission also hosts several events throughout the year, such as the annual Lewisburg-North Logan County History Festival. The Festival includes a variety of activities such as guided tours, music, art, and historical re-enactments.

The Commission is dedicated to preserving the history of Lewisburg-North Logan County and is committed to providing educational programs and resources that promote an appreciation and understanding of the area’s past. They are dedicated to helping future generations understand and appreciate the history of the area.

This is a monument to Jefferson Davis, funded by the Daughters of the Confederacy and even the Kentucky General Assembly[!?!] during the Jim Crow era. It is now a state museum. It is here because Fairview, Kentucky is the birthplace of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. During the Civil War, Davis could not travel to Kentucky because Kentucky remained and fought for the United States. It should be noted that despite Kentucky being a slave state, the overwhelming majority of Kentuckians joined up, fought for, and even sacrificed their lives for the United States, not the Confederacy.

I find it interesting that the road sign marks Fairview as the birthplace of United States Joint Chief of Staff General J.W. Ralston, NOT the big huge monument in the background to its other native, Confederate Jefferson Davis.

Born June 3, 1808 near this 20th Century monument to him in Western Kentucky, Jefferson Davis was President of the Confederate States of America. His cause of white supremacy and the perpetual enslavement of African Americans was lost during his first, only, and incompleted term in office. Slavery was abolished shortly after the Civil War of 1861 to 1865, in which the South bore the brunt of destruction. Nearly 200,000 African Americans joined the U.S. military to fight against the Confederacy.

Yes, I understand these were different times with American slavery being the modern leftovers of the Iron Age after the age of the Enlightenment had ended, but even so these words of Davis come down through history with a particularly putrid and bitter taste. Shortly after Davis' speech, a bloody Civil War ensued. In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution freed slaves. In 1868 the 14th Amendment made them citizens, and the 15th Amendment to the United States Constitution of 1870 gave former slaves the vote.

This image of a tall obelisk is of the Jefferson Davis Memorial in Davis' birthplace of Fairview, Kentucky. The Daughters of the Confederacy helped fund its construction, which began during the Jim Crow era, 1917. The memorial completed and opened in 1924.

This monument is to white supremacist Jefferson Davis, who was born in Kentucky near here. He eventually became President of the Confederacy. Davis' quote above is the opposite sentiment from the signers of the Declaration of Independence. That signed document, written by Thomas Jefferson, declared: &quot;We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.&quot;

As a conservative Democratic U.S. Senator from Mississippi, Jefferson Davis would point out to his liberal Republican Senate opponents from the north that the law of the land, the U.S. Constitution, took precedence over the words of the Declaration. In the Constitution, enslaved African American men, who were not allowed to vote, were counted as 3/5 of a white man for purposes of allocating electoral votes. U.S. courts supported slavery. In 1857 a stacked U.S. Supreme Court eventually ruled in Dred Scott vs. Sandford that blacks, be they slave or free, would not be considered citizens of the United States. Chaos and a Civil War would shortly ensue. Davis lauded the Dred Scott decision by the Supreme Court, saying that it finally settled &quot;whether Cuffee [a derogatory slave nickname for a black man] should be kept in his normal condition [inferior, enslaved, and not having human rights] or not.&quot;

The Jefferson Davis monument's construction started in 1917 and finished in 1924, during the rise of <a href="https://www.britannica.com/event/Jim-Crow-law" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Jim Crow laws</a> and the revisionist history of the <a href="https://www.history.com/news/how-the-cult-of-robert-e-lee-was-born" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Confederate Lost Cause myth</a>. It is now part of a state history museum.

The quote in the title is a reply on 29 February 1860 from Democrat Jefferson Davis in the U.S. Senate to anti-slavery advocate Republican William H. Seward in the Senate Chamber, U.S. Capitol. Davis would become the President of the Confederate States of America two years after he spoke these words.

Thank God he lost Jefferson Davis, the U.S. Senator from Mississippi and Confederate President, was born just a few miles from Elkton in Fairview, Kentucky.

During the Civil War Kentuckians overwhelmingly were pro-Union except for a few sparsely populated counties in Western Kentucky.

I wanted to return to days of yore but reality has moved on

Remembering when Jefferson Davis broke Kentucky's neutrality and played its governor for a fool A recent storm snapped a large tree like a twig at the Jefferson Davis Monument at his birthplace in Fairview, Kentucky.

Whenever I look at the Jefferson Davis Monument (photo above), I cannot help but think of how Kentucky's governor, Beriah Magoffin, was played for the fool by the President of the Confederate States of America, Jefferson Davis.

The Kentucky governor's aim was that President Lincoln and the south's Jefferson Davis would treat Kentucky as a neutral state. Keep the Civil War battles out! Protect its citizens. &quot;I think Kentucky has a right to assume a neutral position,&quot; said Magoffin. Governor Magoffin knew the old government and the U.S. Constitution but then stuck his neck way out to appease the new government of the South. That gave the Democratic Southern Conservative even more of a reputation for being a southern sympathizer in a state OVERWHELMINGLY filled with pro-Union state congressmen, senators, and voters. In essence, Magoffin's efforts contributed to him becoming a political lame duck. Nonetheless, Kentucky's governor pushed for and was convinced through his communications with Jeff Davis in the summer of 1861 that the two had an understanding. The Confederate President would NOT order the invasion of neutral Kentucky. The governor told Kentucky lawmakers that Kentucky had an understanding with Davis. It would be left alone by the Confederacy.

Unfortunately, the supposed mutual understanding was just one sided. On September 4, 1861, towards the end of that same summer, the Confederate Army invaded Kentucky to set up a major fort at Columbus on the Mississippi River.

Even with major egg on his face, the governor still hoped to salvage Kentucky's supposed peace with the South. If he could veto the lawmakers petitioning the United States to come in and defend the state, maybe he could get the South to still respect Kentucky's state borders without a battle. But it was too late. Magoffin’s reputation was blown. Kentucky lawmakers ran to the United States for protection. Kentucky's governor was now lamer than a duck without legs and feathers. He stepped down. It was his third year in office.

The Jefferson Davis Monument was constructed in Davis' birthplace of Fairview, Kentucky. A local Confederate fan started it and the Daughters of the Confederacy helped finish it. It was set up after World War I to remember Davis, whose reputation was increasingly growing during that time to be the hero of the Lost Cause myth.

Besides the monument, the spot in modern times has become a state museum to Jeff Davis.
