The Greenup County War Memorial Inc. in Flatwoods, Kentucky is a non-profit, volunteer organization that was established in 1987 to honor the veterans of Greenup County who served in the United States Armed Forces. The organization is dedicated to honoring those who have served and to preserving the history of their service. The War Memorial is located at the entrance of Flatwoods City Park, and consists of a three-story granite memorial tower and a semi-circular wall that lists the names of those who served. The memorial tower is inscribed with the names of those who died in service, while the walls behind the tower list the names of those who served in the armed forces. The memorial also features a fountain, a flagpole, and a statue of a soldier. The memorial also has a museum which houses artifacts from all branches of the military, as well as a library which features books and other materials related to the military and its history. The memorial is open to the public and is free to visit, though donations are accepted. The War Memorial is a source of pride to those who live in Greenup County and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served the United States.

Non-Native Invasive Species Non-native invasive species are a widespread, persistent problem across southeast Ohio. These invasive species outcompete native species, displacing them and disrupting the natural balance. This picture shows a dense understory of the non-native, invasive bush honeysuckle in the Hanging Rock area of the Ironton Ranger District. The Hanging Rock area is an area of the Wayne National Forest that is particularly filled with nonnative invasive species. This is due mostly to its mining history. When mining companies reclaimed the land after mining was finished, they found that most plants struggled to grow in the harsh conditions. They often turned to hardy—but non-native—species like autumn olive and bush honeysuckle, which would easily grow in the reclaimed areas, but would also quickly spread into nearby non-mined areas. Hanging Rock Ponds The Hanging Rock Off-Highway Vehicle Trail System winds around what was previously a strip mine. This trail system features stunted trees and dozens of small ponds that have since been stocked with fish. Rock House Trail The Rock House Trail is one of the many trail options in the Lake Vesuvius Recreation Area. The out-and-back trail is 0.75 miles long and leads to a large rock overhang. This trail is a great option for those wanting a short, easy experience with fantastic views. Benches are available every few hundred feet, and interpretive signs can be found along the way. The final stretch features a wooden boardwalk that leads to a small deck complete with benches underneath the rock overhang. The main feature of this trail is the large rock overhang. These types of geologic features are commonly called “rock houses” or “rock shelters.” This rock house is made of sandstone formed during the Pennsylvanian Period sometime between 318 million and 299 million years ago. The rock house itself was created more recently when water eroded the upper and lower portions of the sandstone at different rates. The lower portions of the sandstone are softer and could be eroded faster than the harder sections near the top. Rock houses have been important to and loved by people for thousands of years. American Indians used these geologic features for shelter, ceremonies, and more. In the 1800s, southeast Ohioans would use such rock houses for shelter, ceremonies, labor union meetings, and beyond. Some outlaws even infamously used rock houses as secret outposts to hide stolen goods or themselves from the law. Today, many people visit rock houses for their beauty and awe-inspiring grandeur.
