This particular natural bridge is part of one of its large canyon† areas, Kentucky's Red River Gorge. --- †Note: If the Grand Canyon were not in the southwestern part of the United States but back east, my guess is it likely would be called Great Gorge. If it were in Kentucky, well, my bet is Kentuckians would have named it Big Gorge. (I'm surprised we don't call it that now–e.g. "Did you visit that Big Gorge in Arizona? The Whipple through truss bridge was built as a railroad bridge ca 1900 for the Ohio & Kentucky Railway (O&K). The O&K rail line was abandoned in the 1930s. The bridge was later converted into a highway bridge. The Kentucky Department of Highways extensively repaired and raised the bridge in 1956. It was repaired again in 2015.
