[Historical note: Major General Buell and his Army of the Ohio were oblivious to the battle on October 8, 1862, in which his I Corp was engaged against the Confederate Braxton Bragg's Army of Mississippi. Had McCook been too hasty in engaging the enemy without the backup of the rest of the Army? Speaking of which, where were Buell and the rest of the Army of the Ohio? The undulating Chaplin Hills had deflected up and absorbed the sounds of the battle so that Buell was oblivious to the bloody battle. Frankly, that is a weak excuse for ignorance that begs many questions.
The Army of the Ohio and its tens of thousands of soldiers were at rest in Perryville, except for Major General Alexander McCook's unfortunate I Corp, who were fiercely battling the Army of Mississippi amidst those hills. With deep casualties on both sides, Bragg left Kentucky for Tennessee before the entire Army of the Ohio joined in. The Confederacy could ill afford casualty levels comparable to U.S. troops, although that is what it already had in battling I Corp. It would be disastrous for the Confederacy if its Army of Mississippi were annihilated by the Army of the Ohio. That would leave a gaping hole for Union forces of the north, Kentucky, occupied-Western Tennessee, and the largely pro-Union Eastern Tennessee to funnel through Middle Tennessee straight into the heart of Georgia, which would quickly end the war. The large Confederate armies understandably shifted strategy from offensive maneuvers in Kentucky to defensive maneuvers in Middle Tennessee in 1863 and then Georgia in 1864.
