Before coal, Kentucky produced iron Big time! Inside Fitchburg's long-abandoned iron furnace of Eastern Kentucky, there is a hollow iron pipe that leads straight up to the roof. On a sunny day, the verdant Appalachian hardwood forest outside is reflected inside the furnace's flukes and tunnels. Plus, the stone has some green of its own. Limestone?
Where did the iron producing town of Fitchburg go? <b>Among Kentucky’s 11 historical treasures: Fitchburg Iron Furnace</b> There were many families and iron workers who lived and worked in this Eastern Kentucky industrial town of Fitchburg during the 19th Century. Now there is pretty much nothing in this hollow, except for the remains of the gigantic furnace and a few modern farms. What happened to this Appalachian town? During the early Industrial Revolution, the production of pig iron was one of Kentucky's major industries. And then it wasn't. The above photo of mine is an image of one such historical iron furnace, the world's largest such iron furnace, in Daniel Boone National Forest in Eastern Kentucky and its hollow. Fitchburg Road runs down the middle. Unfortunately, the Fitchburg furnace followed a quick speculation boom and bust in the 1870s. The <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/dbnf/recarea/?recid=64853" rel="noreferrer nofollow">U.S.D.A. Forest Service website says</a> of Kentucky's many iron towns such as Fitchburg: "During the 1830s, Kentucky was the third largest iron producer in the country. Today, the remnants of iron furnaces stand as monuments to the past, reminding us of once bustling communities associated with these industrial developments…Fitchburg is the world's largest dual-stack furnace." Unfortunately, here today gone tomorrow. Demand softened. The production in Kentucky of pig iron became more expensive than other options, states <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitchburg_Furnace" rel="noreferrer nofollow">Wikipedia</a>. Kentucky's iron industry evaporated.

I'm assuming the rocks around it are the remnants of structures. This colossal furnace, the world's biggest charcoal-fired furnace of its kind, followed a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitchburg_Furnace" rel="noreferrer nofollow">quick speculation boom and bust</a> in the 1870s. The <a href="https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/dbnf/recarea/?recid=64853" rel="noreferrer nofollow">U.S. website says</a> of Kentucky iron towns such as Fitchburg: "During the 1830s, Kentucky was the third largest iron producer in the country. Only the bricks of Fitchburg's core furnace structure remain.
