Breckinridge County Historical Society Inc is a non-profit organization located in Hardinsburg, Kentucky. The society was established in 1974 and is dedicated to preserving the history and heritage of Breckinridge County.

Hancock Co. Jail - Hawesville, KY This is the 1854 cornerstone from the Hancock County Jail. It is located at the Hawesville Train Depot Museum.
Hawesville, KY train depot From the marker: Rails of Louisville, St. Louis, and Texas Railroad laid here June 9, 1888. First passenger train ran between Owensboro and Stephensport Oct. 7, 1888. Service between Evansville and Louisville began in April 1889. Rail line later became Louisville, Henderson, St. Louis R.R. and then part of L&N system in 1929. Present station constructed 1902; additions made ca. 1919. During heyday, six L&N trains stopped here daily. Embarkation point for Army troops during World War I. Pres. Harry S. Truman spoke here during an election campaign whistlestop, Sept. 30, 1948. Local passenger service ended in the late 1950s.

Cannelton, IN / Castlebury Inn (#0371) Another example of a building that left me feeling like I had entered some sort of odd zone. This is the Castlebury Inn, built in 1867, obviously closed for an extended period, but still discoverable on the web as a Bed & Breakfast. Though the building looked long-abandoned, looking through the window the interior looked like it was just recently abandoned. Cannelton, IN / St Michael’s (#0368) Because of its location on a hill, it was impossible to get a full picture of the front of the church – I chose this perspective to highlight the detail around the entrance.
Cannelton, IN / St Michael’s (#0366) On the hill, and a rather striking view when driving by, St. Michael’s Catholic church. I could find almost no information on it, but a plaque on the building does say that the church was founded in 1859.

Cannelton, IN / Myers Grade School since 1868 (#0362) Myers Grade School has been a public elementary school for Cannelton since 1868; it is believed to be the longest continuously used school building in the country. It was originally Cannelton High School serving grades 1-8, was later renamed ‘Myers’ in honor of a teacher. It still has slate chalkboards and original wooden trim. Cannelton, IN Cotton Mill preservation/restoration (#0360) In small town Indiana along the Ohio River is not where I would have expected to find an astounding story of historic preservation and restoration! The mill, of Romanesque architecture, was completed in 1851 and was once the largest industrial building west of the Allegheny (Appalachian) Mountains; the mill was in operation until 1954. Around 2000, the mill was rehabilitated as affordable housing, and received accolades for how that conversion was handled. Cannelton, IN abandoned clay pipe industry? (#0359) Cannelton was most famous for its cotton mill (later picture), but one side of town had what seemed to be an abandoned vitrified clay pipe production facility. With a little searching I found that Cannelton Sewer Pipe Company had started in 1906 and had been a major producer of clay pipe up until some time in recent history. If you look closely at this picture, it seems as if their might have been a fairly recent fire. A satellite view from Google (adjacent) shows large fields of stacked clay pipe behind this facility that appear to be in good condition, but the growth around the stacks suggests that the fire may have been a couple of years back.
