Through the pop bottle looking glass Ah, the world the advertising men of Madison Avenue created. As the years pass and I remember the past, I can't always tell if the nostalgic memories that I select as my stories are their influence or my actual experienced reality. This is a Duncan Hines history exhibit at a local university. The paraphernalia is real. The people are cutouts. Hines was a native Bowling Green man of Kentucky, who successfully marketed food nationally. Yes, there is nostalgia in this yellowish-green image. I feel its pull. There is comfort in this scene. The husband is near the center. His cutout wife assists. But this isn't necessarily who we are. We're more quirky. If you doubt that, just look around. (I'm not even sure it is who we were, although it does look like a lot of old television show reruns that I watched.) Marketers began to realize that considerable money had been left off the table in their messaging. Modern Duncan Hines, now part of the Conagra group of brands, has a more sundry look in their publicity.
