LEXINGTON CHILDRENS MUSEUM

LEXINGTON, KY

Mary Todd Lincoln House, Main Street, Lexington, KY Built in 1803-1806, this Federal-style house was originally an inn and tavern, known as “The Sign of the Green Tree,” operating until 1832, when it was purchased by Robert Smith Todd to serve as his family home. The house was the residence of Mary Todd Lincoln from 1832 until 1839, when she married Abraham Lincoln and moved to Springfield, Illinois. The house was where Mary and Abraham often came to visit the Todd family after their marriage. The house became a bordello in 1879, and remained in use as one until around the turn of the 20th Century. The house features a five-bay front facade, a red flemish bond brick exterior, a rough-hewn stone base, a side-gable roof, a gabled rear ell, twelve-over-twelve double-hung windows, and a wooden rear porch. The house was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971, and is a contributing structure in the Western Suburb Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The house was restored in the mid-1970s thanks to the efforts of Beula C. Nunn, wife of Governor Louie B. Nunn, the Kentucky Mansions Preservation Foundation, Inc., and the Metropolitan Women’s Club of Lexington. The house has operated as a historical museum since 1977.
