MCDOWELL HOUSE AND APOTHECARY SHOP

MCDowell House and Apothecary Shop is a historic two-story brick building located in Danville, KY. Built in 1830, it is the oldest remaining commercial building in the city. The building served as a residence until the early 20th century when it was converted into an apothecary shop that served the local community until the late 1970s.

The exterior of the building is largely unchanged since its construction. It is a two-story brick building with a gable roof. The front of the building is dominated by a large arched window. The door is situated just below the window and is flanked by two smaller windows. The building's original design included a porch that has since been removed.

The interior of the building is divided into two parts. The ground floor is a retail space, which was formerly the apothecary shop. This room includes an original pressed tin ceiling and a large marble counter. The upper floor contains two bedrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom.

The MCDowell House and Apothecary Shop is a significant part of local history. It is the only commercial building of its era still standing in the city and it has been designated a Kentucky Historic Site. The building is now owned by the Danville Historical Society, who are working to restore the building to its original condition.
