WAVELAND STATE HISTORIC SITE

LEXINGTON, KY

Time and tide wait for no man If you want to know how much time has passed in this library, you just need to look up at the rotunda.

Rome and Roman numerals, where would we be without you? Oh, we'd use Arabic numbers to avoid collisions with words, cog-turning sunless clocks, and the concept of zero. Got it!

Waveland State Historic Site is located in Lexington, Kentucky and is one of the most iconic historic sites in the state. The historic site is a Greek Revival Mansion that was built in 1847 and is a registered National Historic Landmark. The property was originally owned by Colonel William Waveland, a wealthy slave-owner, and later passed to his son, General Joseph B. Waveland. The mansion was used as a Confederate headquarters during the Civil War and has since been restored to its original beauty.

The site includes the mansion, a two-story brick building, and a separate kitchen. The main house is an impressive three-story brick structure with a central hall and four rooms on each floor. The lower level and kitchen have been reasonably restored with period furniture and artifacts. The second floor contains a library, parlor, and several bedrooms, while the third floor contains a music room and additional bedrooms.

The grounds of the site feature a large garden, a gazebo, and a historic smokehouse. The grounds also contain a variety of artifacts, including a cannon, a bell, and a carriage house. All of the artifacts are open to the public and are well-maintained by the site's staff.

Waveland State Historic Site is a popular destination for history buffs and those interested in learning about the history of the area. The site offers guided tours, programs, and special events to visitors and is open year-round. The site is also a popular venue for weddings, corporate events, and other special occasions.
