Medicine Lodge Indian & Peace is a historical site located in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. It was the location of a peace council held in 1867 between various Native American tribes and the United States government. The council was organized by General William T. Sherman in an attempt to end the violence and bloodshed between the Native Americans and settlers moving westward.
The peace council was held under a large cottonwood tree, now known as the Peace Treaty Tree, which still stands today. The treaty signed at the council established a peace between the tribes and the US government, and allowed for safe passage of settlers moving westward.
Today, Medicine Lodge Indian & Peace is a popular tourist attraction and historical site. Visitors can see the Peace Treaty Tree and visit the Medicine Lodge Peace Treaty Museum, which features exhibits and artifacts from the council and the Native American tribes.
The site also hosts an annual Peace Treaty Pageant, which reenacts the council and the signing of the peace treaty. The pageant features hundreds of performers and is a popular event for locals and tourists alike.
