Allen's Conoco - Route 66 - Commerce, OK Allen's Conoco Fillin' Station in Commerce was built ca. 1930 by F.D. Mitchell as a place for travelers to stop along the newly paved Route 66. While it served Conoco fuel gas for the first few years, it became a Phillips 66 Gas Station in 1938. It is rumored that Bonnie & Clyde may have stopped for gas here. Since the green cottage style gas station is built against a red brick wall, it's also known as the "Hole in the Wall Conoco Station." It was closed for many years but was purchased and refurbished as a beloved photo op known for its vibrant green paint with red trim. As a personal note, this is my last Oklahoma or Route 66 photo I'll be uploading for a while. I guess that just means I have to get back out there.
IMG_4800a I don't think this truck is a part of the "Cars" franchise. It sits in front of Jordan Disposal Service, just down Front St. from Luigi's and Cars on the Route. I admire this company's community spirit!

IMG_4808a Other characters: "Sheriff" (voiced by Michael Wallis who signed this replica) is a 1949 Mercury Eight police car. Sheriff is painted in classic black and white with a single red light dome, two sirens, and curb feelers. Sheriff was the first resident of Radiator Springs to appear in the original film and the first to meet Lightning McQueen
IMG_4809a Other characters: "Lightning McQueen" is not modeled on a specific type of vehicle. Lightning owns a racing academy with Doc Hudson called the "Doc Hudson Racing Academy" where he trains rookie racers in the act of speed and good sportsmanship. During his career, Lightning has won several Piston Cup championships.
IMG_4810a In the film, Tractor Tipping is a game that Mater and his cousins invented in their early years. To play the game, one must sneak up to a tractor, honk their horn as loud as they can, and if done correctly, the tractor will tip over. Frank is a combine harvester who guards the tractors at night while they sleep, and attempts to get Mater and Lightning when he finds that they are tractor-tipping.

IMG_4812a The truck had been parked for years next to an abandoned, circa-1933 gas station at Old Route 66 and Main Street in Galena. Galena businessman Larry Courtney purchased the building, sans truck, to convert it into a gift shop and snack bar. Now “Mater” has become a part of the gas station’s attractions.
IMG_4811a The Kan-O-Tex Service Station bears the branding of the former Kanotex Refining Company (1909-1953), a now-defunct regional fuel brand named for Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The Kan-O-Tex logo was a Kansas sunflower behind a five-point star.
