The Birger Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas, is dedicated to the life and works of Swedish-American artist Birger Sandzen. Located on the campus of Bethany College, the gallery was established in 1955 and is the first museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.
The gallery holds over 250 original works of art, including paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs. Many of these works were created by Sandzen during the early years of his career, and reflect his interest in the American landscape and his affinity for the Swedish heritage of his homeland. Works from the later period of his career, when he was experimenting with different styles and media, are also on display.
The gallery also includes a permanent exhibit of photographs and personal artifacts that tell the story of Sandzen’s life, from his childhood in Sweden to his later years in Kansas. Visitors can also explore an outdoor sculpture garden, featuring a selection of Sandzen’s sculptures.
The gallery offers a variety of educational programs, workshops, and lectures throughout the year, and hosts several special events and exhibitions. The gallery also serves as a host site for the Birger Sandzen Symposium, an annual gathering of scholars, collectors, and enthusiasts who celebrate the life and works of Sandzen.
The Birger Sandzen Memorial Art Gallery is open year-round and admission is free.
