B-29 Memorial Plaza Great Bend, Kansas

Great Bend Municipal Airport was constructed in the early 1940s as a World War II Army Air Force Base to accommodate the B-29 Superfortress bomber.

The airfield included three intersecting 8,000-foot long paved runways, taxiways, aircraft park aprons, aircraft storage hangars, and several support facilities to include administrative buildings, barracks, and automobile access roads.

The men and women who contributed to the success of the war effort included elite combat crews, mechanics, armorers, cooks and clerks. Early in 1944, the 58th Bomb Wing took off from the airport runways.

After World War II, the airport was transferred to the City of Great Bend, and the City began to modify the facility to better serve civilian aviation. Located at the entrance to the Great Bend Municipal Airport, the B-29 Memorial Plaza is dedicated to everyone involved in building, flying and providing support for the Boeing B-29 Superfortress. The memorial honors bomber crews, groups, and individuals on bronze plaques and bricks.

Sunflower Rod and Custom Association is a non-profit organization based in Great Bend, KS. Founded in 1966, the association is dedicated to promoting and preserving the automotive culture of custom and vintage cars in the state of Kansas. The organization hosts a variety of events throughout the year, including car shows, cruises, and swap meets, that bring together car enthusiasts from all over the state.

One of the highlights of the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association's calendar is the annual Great Bend Car Show, which takes place in the summer and attracts hundreds of attendees and exhibitors. The show features a wide range of classic and custom cars, trucks, and motorcycles, as well as live music, food vendors, and other entertainment. The association also organizes a number of smaller events throughout the year, including monthly cruise-ins and charity fundraisers.

In addition to its events, the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association is also committed to supporting the local community. The organization has donated funds to a variety of charitable organizations over the years, including the local food bank and the Make-A-Wish Foundation. With its focus on both preserving automotive history and giving back to the community, the Sunflower Rod and Custom Association is a beloved institution in Great Bend and beyond.
