The Douglas County Historical Society (DCHS) is a nonprofit organization located in Lawrence, Kansas. Founded in 1954, DCHS is dedicated to the preservation and promotion of the history of Douglas County and the surrounding region. The Society is committed to educating the public about the rich history and culture of the region, and to preserving, protecting, and interpreting the collections of artifacts, documents, and photographs in its care.

The DCHS operates the Watkins Community Museum of History which is located in downtown Lawrence. The museum houses permanent and rotating exhibits that focus on different aspects of the history and culture of Douglas County, including the Civil War, the Underground Railroad, Native American history, and the history of the University of Kansas. The museum also features interactive exhibits, educational programs, and special events.

The DCHS also maintains two historic sites in the area: the Baker Wetlands Discovery Center and the Lecompton Historic Site. The Baker Wetlands Discovery Center is a nature center that features interactive exhibits and educational programs related to wetlands ecology. The Lecompton Historic Site is a preserved village that was once the territorial capital of Kansas. It includes several historic buildings, guided tours, and a museum.

The DCHS also offers several research services, including an online database search, in-person research assistance, and the ability to access the Society’s collections. The Society also publishes a quarterly newsletter and an annual journal, Douglas County History. The journal includes scholarly articles on topics related to the history of Douglas County and the surrounding region.
