Terrace Hill is the official residence of the Governor of Iowa and is located on a hilltop overlooking downtown Des Moines. Built in 1869, it is the oldest and most recognizable landmark in Des Moines and is a National Historic Landmark. The Italianate-style home is a three-story brick building with a large central tower and features elaborate detailing, including ornate gables and dormers, a grand balustrade-topped porch, and a slate roof. Inside, the house contains many original furnishings and artwork, including a grand staircase, an ornate parlor, and a library.

Terrace Hill is open for public tours throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of the home and learn about the history of Iowa’s governors. Tours include a guided walk through the house and gardens, with a focus on architecture, original furnishings, and artwork. The house also hosts special events throughout the year, such as holiday tours and lectures by Iowa’s current and former governors.

Terrace Hill stands as a testament to Iowa’s rich history, and is an integral part of the Des Moines community. It is a reminder of Iowa’s past and an important symbol of the state’s future.
