TERRACE HILL

Terrace Hill is the official residence of the Governor of Iowa and is located on a hilltop overlooking downtown Des Moines. Built in 1869, it is the oldest and most recognizable landmark in Des Moines and is a National Historic Landmark. The Italianate-style home is a three-story brick building with a large central tower and features elaborate detailing, including ornate gables and dormers, a grand balustrade-topped porch, and a slate roof. Inside, the house contains many original furnishings and artwork, including a grand staircase, an ornate parlor, and a library.

Terrace Hill is open for public tours throughout the year, allowing visitors to experience the grandeur of the home and learn about the history of Iowa’s governors.
