TWENTY-FOURTH IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY REGIMENT

The Twenty-fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment was a military unit formed in Cedar Rapids, Iowa during the American Civil War. It was formed in September 1862 and served until July 1865. The regiment was composed of men from various counties in Iowa, including Linn, Cedar, Johnson, and Muscatine.

The regiment was organized by Colonel George Pomutz, who had previously served in the German army. The Twenty-fourth Iowa saw action in several major battles, including the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou, the Siege of Vicksburg, and the Battle of Atlanta. The regiment also participated in the March to the Sea and the Grand Review of the Armies in Washington, D.C. at the end of the war.

During its service, the Twenty-fourth Iowa suffered 254 casualties, including 70 deaths. The regiment was known for its bravery and dedication to the Union cause. After the war, many of the soldiers returned to Iowa and continued to serve their communities in various ways.

Today, the legacy of the Twenty-fourth Iowa Volunteer Infantry Regiment is remembered through various monuments and memorials, including a monument in Cedar Rapids' Veterans Memorial Park.
