SLOSS Furnaces National Historic Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama is an important part of the city’s history and industrial heritage. The site was established in 1881 as a pig iron-producing blast furnace and operated until 1971. During its operation, the furnaces produced nearly 11,000 tons of iron annually which was used in the manufacturing of many of the city’s products.

The furnaces were constructed with brick and iron, and the two towering brick smokestacks are now iconic symbols of Birmingham. The plant site is comprised of two large blast furnaces, multiple small furnaces, and a variety of support buildings. The furnaces were originally coal-fired, but transitioned to coke-fired operations in the early 1900s.

In 1981, the site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1981. It has since become a popular tourist destination, offering guided tours and educational programs. The furnaces are also the site of the annual Sloss Music & Arts Festival.

Today, the furnaces are open for self-guided tours, where visitors can walk through the furnaces and explore the many historic buildings. The site is also home to a variety of educational programs and events, including the annual Metal Arts Festival. It is a unique and important part of Birmingham's history and is sure to continue to be a popular destination for years to come.
