The French Icarians are a communal society founded in Corning, Iowa in 1855. They are a branch of the Icarians, a utopian socialist movement founded in 1848 by Étienne Cabet, a French lawyer and political philosopher, who was inspired by the ideas of the French philosopher Charles Fourier. The Icarians believed in communal ownership of property, social and economic equality, and the development of cooperative agriculture.

The French Icarians came to Corning, Iowa in 1854, where they established the French Icarians Colony Foundation. They started a communal farm and a small village, with a population of around 200 people. The colony was largely self-sufficient, with a blacksmith, cooper, sawmill, steam flour mill, and other businesses. They had their own school, a library, a store, and a newspaper.

The colony was relatively successful, but its members began to disagree about various aspects of their communal lifestyle. Some wanted to keep the communal lifestyle, while others wanted to move away from it and pursue more individualistic paths. In 1880, the colony was disbanded, and most of the Icarians left to pursue their own interests.

Today, the legacy of the French Icarians is still evident in Corning. The town’s main street is named Icaria Avenue, and there is a historical marker located at the site of the former colony. The Corning Historical Society also offers tours of the colony’s site and has a museum dedicated to the Icarians’ history and culture.
