The Iowa Railroad Historical Society Foundation (IRHSF) is an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the history of the Iowa railroad. It was established in 1978 as a non-profit organization and is located in Boone, Iowa. The foundation is dedicated to researching, preserving, and interpreting the historical and cultural significance of Iowa railroads, as well as developing educational programs and exhibits.
The foundation operates the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad Museum which is a fully functioning operating railroad museum in Boone. The museum offers excursion trains for those interested in experiencing a ride on a piece of Iowa railroad history. The museum also houses a library and archives of railroad-related materials, a large collection of railroad artifacts, photographs, documents, and books.
The foundation also preserves and operates the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad's historic mainline between Boone and the town of Wolf. This section of rail line is a part of the Boone & Scenic Valley Railroad's National Historic Landmark District.
The foundation also offers educational programs for students of all ages about the history of railroads in Iowa. They have developed a series of interactive exhibits and activities which demonstrate the impact of railroads in Iowa.
The IRHSF strives to promote railroads and their importance to the people of Iowa. They are dedicated to honoring the past, protecting the present, and ensuring a future for Iowa railroads.
