The Porter House Museum is a historic house museum located in Decorah, Iowa. Built in 1867, the house was the family home of Adelbert and Grace Porter, prominent citizens of Decorah in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house is a prime example of Italianate architecture, featuring a two-story porch and ornate brackets and cornices.
Today, the Porter House Museum showcases the lives and collections of the Porter family, offering visitors a glimpse into the past. The house is filled with original furniture, artwork, and artifacts, including a collection of over 1,000 dolls and toys. Visitors can take a guided tour of the house and learn about the history of the Porter family and their impact on the community.
In addition to the main house, the Porter House Museum also features a carriage house that has been converted into a gift shop and exhibit space. The gift shop offers a variety of unique items, including locally made crafts, books, and souvenirs. The present Cresco Theatre was built in 1915 and called the Cresco Opera House. It was where the travelling shows stopped to put on their performances between 1914 and the 1920’s.
The Opera House has been fully restored including a chandelier in the lobby and unique decorative plaster work. Residents can attend daily movies at 7:30pm Monday thru Thursday and 7:00 and 9:00pm on week ends. Matinees when warranted. They also have live performances put on by the Cresco Community Theatre.

The Cresco Opera House, also known as the Cresco Theater, is a historic building located in Cresco, Iowa, United States. The first known theater in Cresco was the Lyric Hall, which opened in 1875. It showed the first movies around 1900.[2] The Family and the Cozy theaters opened around the turn of the century. The Lyric was condemned and torn down in 1913, and the other two were considered substandard. The Cresco Commercial Club held a fundraiser in early 1914 to build an opera house. The Cresco Opera House Company was organized around the same time. The building was completed by the end of the year, and it opened in 1915. It was designed by local engineer Joseph H. Howe, and constructed by local builder Martin Johnson. The musical &quot;High Jinks&quot; was the first performance held in the theater. The theater, which seats 425, was equipped to show movies and there was a community hall in the basement.[2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.[1]](https://live.staticflickr.com/4382/36678134056_9db1e432bb_b.jpg)
