The Scottsdale Historical Society Inc. is a non-profit organization founded in 1975 to preserve, protect and promote the history of Scottsdale, Arizona. The Society was initially organized by a group of citizens with the goal of preserving and presenting the history of the region and its people. The Society operates the historic Little Red Schoolhouse in Scottsdale, which was built in 1909 and served as a one-room schoolhouse from 1909 until 1951.
The Scottsdale Historical Society also manages and operates the Scottsdale Historical Museum, which was established to provide “a permanent repository for the collection and curation of Scottsdale’s historical artifacts and to provide educational programs and exhibits that tell the story of Scottsdale’s history”. The museum is located in the restored adobe home of early Scottsdale settler Winfield Scott, and houses a variety of artifacts, photographs and documents related to Scottsdale’s history.
The Scottsdale Historical Society also organizes educational events, lectures and tours, as well as community involvement activities such as the annual “Taste of Old Town” festival. The Society also serves the greater Scottsdale community by providing research services, offering access to its library and archives, and partnering with other organizations to promote historic preservation. The Scottsdale Historical Society’s mission is to serve as “the primary source of historical knowledge and as a steward of Scottsdale’s heritage.”
