The Monona Historical Society (MHS) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1970 to preserve the history of Monona, Iowa. MHS works to collect, preserve, and interpret materials related to Monona’s history and to promote an appreciation of its heritage. The MHS’s collection includes documents, artifacts, photographs, and other materials from the town and surrounding area.

MHS operates out of the historical Martin House, which was built in 1885 and is one of the oldest homes in Monona. The Martin House serves as a museum, featuring artifacts from Monona’s past, as well as a research library for local history. The MHS also maintains a collection of historic buildings, including the old Presbyterian Church, the original Monona Hotel, and the former Monona State Bank.

The MHS’s activities include providing educational programming, organizing events, and publishing books and articles related to the town’s history. The Society offers a variety of programs and tours, including field trips to historic sites, lectures, and school programs. Additionally, MHS hosts an annual Heritage Days Festival each August, which includes displays of historic artifacts, musical performances, and other activities.

The MHS is an active member of the Iowa Historical Society, and is involved in regional and state-wide preservation efforts. The Society works in partnership with other organizations, such as the Monona Public Library and the Monona Chamber of Commerce, to provide educational opportunities and to promote the town’s history. The MHS is also a founding member of the Upper Iowa Valley Historical Society, which includes the towns of Monona, Marquette, and McGregor.
