ST PETER AND PAUL

HARPER, IA

One Road To Another CPKC's first go at linking countries via trains was with 181/180, a pair of trains from Bensenville, IL to San Luis Potosi in Mexico and vice versa, respectively. These intermodal trains use the KCS and KCSM for most of their run, but use the CPs line from Kansas City to Chicago to form the last link. This trackage was made from the remains of the Milwaukee Road and Rock Island by the DM&E using The Rock from Davenport to Washington and the Milwaukee's Washington to Kansas City line, making for some interesting relics along the right of way - including the right of way itself.

Built in 1903, the Milwaukee Road bridge over 250th Street is over 300 foot long and a rarity among bridges in the region. Reportedly, it's also the oldest of the underslung truss bridges in Iowa, a type that was evidently not often permitted for construction way back when. Hard to believe it's still good over a hundred years later, and considering CPKC is supposed to dramatically increase how much traffic is on this line, it begs the question as to whether this bridge will become a casualty of progress or stand yet longer.

KCS4111 & CP9365 make up the power on 181. I waited here for a little while for it after having visited and left Ottumwa earlier, and unfortunately despite my best efforts I failed to get to Cotter fast enough to snap the Rock Island signals there properly. Such is the way it goes.
