Payoff The recent troubles the CP2816 has had in Mexico have me already looking back at my brief chase through Illinois and Iowa a month ago. To think that this was to be have been a troublesome day for them - I'm sure the crew down south would welcome a day as simple as this in comparison. After shooting the "Empress" back in Sabula, we'd hopped back in the car and got moving farther south, taking an alternate and far less trafficked route. Earlier chaser traffic suggested we should get off that main road and try to just meet the train farther away. As it turned out, a stuck tender brake back at Clinton meant this wasn't even necessary, so we probably missed a shot opportunity or two as a result. Without this knowledge though, I got a certain feeling that we were heading too far away, and I decided to pull us back to the main chase. Totally empty roads, no signs of other chasers... I was worried I'd made the wrong call. Finally, we happened upon just a couple cars parked on the side of the highway - clearly fellow chasers. We joined them and learned of the brake issues, then waited and waited. A happy accident, as I'd not seen this spot before, but it was a fine curve I couldn't say no to! Rain was light, but over the next forty minutes definitely further soaked all of us stood there. When the howl of the whistle in the distance announced the Canadian steam engines presence, I think everybody felt pretty damn relieved. CP2816 made quite the show when it rounded the curve here near Le Claire. A perfect view if ever there was one.

Soaked at Sabula The CP2816s trek across Illinois was fraught with chasers, pacers, and entirely too much rain. Calling yesterdays chase eventful was an understatement, with dozens upon dozens of folks out chasing the thing - some even crashing on the way! Huge photo lines formed in dozens of places, but the biggest was almost certainly the bridge at Sabula, home to a massive Mississippi River-spanning swing bridge. The 2816 took some 45 minutes in Savanna, back in Illinois, to do some routine maintenance and further inspection on the pilot after they had reportedly hit a tree back at Byron. This gave us and many others ample time to crowd around Sabula, Iowa's only island town! This former Milwaukee Road swing bridge is an impressive structure. Built in 1906, with some rebuilt in 1930, this fascinating work of engineering drew a huge crowd of photographers despite the rain. Rain had been plaguing the chase all day, and while it was far from showers or storms, a light rain for 45+ minutes will definitely pretty well soak you, your clothes, and your camera equipment. I quickly ran out of dry areas to wipe the lens of my camera off, as did many others... Despite how cold and wet most of us were by the end of the wait, the incredible sight and sound of the 1930 Canadian steam locomotive made the wait well worth it. This was the shot we had been hoping for all day, and suffice to say, I was very happy to have it in hand. Out of a very long day, this was definitely a stand out moment. What a train, what a bridge, what a day!
