Light Power & Lighter Clouds The Indiana portion of the KBS Railroad is a nice, easy chase - low track speed combined with a highway that parallels the track the whole way to Lafayette. It's also home to a number of small towns, including Swanington.

Swanington is made up of a few blocks of houses, a bunch of trees, and ADM Swanington. The ADM plant is all that's really visible from US52, but access is easy, and the siding that is used for the railroad to work the plant makes for an easy spot to snap a photo. Earlier in the day, clouds had totally shadowed the whole plant, but on the light power return trip, skies were clear and light was in the right spot for something fun.

KBS705 is in fact not our leader, but the trailing unit. 705 and 706 were paired up on the rear end of the grain train that had been dropped off back at Lafayette. Now, they are dragged behind the 702 and 701 on the return to Iroquois Jct. Prairie Preservation Guild Ltd is a non-profit organization located in Fowler, Indiana. Founded in 2009, the mission of the Prairie Preservation Guild is to protect and preserve Midwestern prairie ecosystems and the diverse species that inhabit them. The Guild seeks to achieve its mission through land acquisition, conservation easements, restoration, and monitoring of prairie ecosystems.

Prairie Preservation Guild works with landowners, government agencies, and other conservation organizations to restore and protect prairies. The Guild’s restoration activities focus on restoring the full range of habitats and species that make up a prairie ecosystem. This includes restoring native grasses, forbs, and other species, as well as controlling invasive species and managing grazing.

In addition to restoration activities, the Guild also works to protect prairie ecosystems through land acquisition and conservation easements. Conservation easements are agreements between the Guild and landowners that permanently limit the uses of the land, often including activities such as development, grazing, and mowing. The Guild also holds land in trust to ensure its protection in perpetuity.

The Prairie Preservation Guild also engages in public outreach activities to educate the public about prairie ecosystems, their importance, and the threats they face. The Guild regularly sponsors events and activities, holds workshops, and provides resources to help landowners and other interested parties protect and restore prairies. This Vexes Me Just west of Otterbein, IN is a small grain elevator at Foresman, though it is no longer rail served as evidenced by the cut switch. This portion of the New York Central was dually operated - and I think even dually owned - by the NYC and the Nickel Plate Road. Not much remains as evidence towards either one, mostly just junk is strewn around. We're nearing the end of the eastbound run of the KBS for the day, though even then we won't be done quite yet. It's quite a leisurely chase, which is a nice change of pace!

Turning Through Templeton The KBS railroad is interesting for many reasons, but one of which is its trackage. I touched on it previously, but the railroad is formed like a triangle with tracks from the New York Central, Nickel Plate Road, and Milwaukee Road. Each of them is pretty straight, with little in the way of curvature - typical of midwestern rail lines - but curves can most certainly still be found.

At Templeton, Indiana, the former New York Central merges with the former Nickel Plate Road. From here onwards to Lafayette, the tracks were actually shared by both the NYC and NKP. Little remains that would identify either long-dead company, but the tracks are still used by the KBS today. Templeton itself is rather small, hosting a few blocks worth of homes as well as one rail-serviceable industry. I'm not sure what that industry is nor if it is even still rail served, but the tracks are there anyways.

KBS701 and 702 lead our train on the ex-NYC curve onto the final stretch towards Lafayette. Clouds had been troublesome for the previous few shots, but Templeton was thankfully sunny enough for a good photo. Always nice to get a curve shot!

Sheltered in Sheldon Anyone that knows me at this point knows I am always after old school signals, and my visit to the KBS was not without seeking out this exact thing. KBS is cool for a number of reasons - power, trackage, grain elevators and other infrastructure, but they roster a few old signals. The small town of Sheldon, IL has managed to keep four Type G trilight-style signals, a New York Central staple, sheltered nicely. Though they look very well-worn, all of these old signals are still operable and earning their keep as they protect the KBS / TP&amp;W diamond in the middle of town. Interestingly, the south-facing signal still here has the mount for a second head, but lacks the head itself, long ago removed.

With good light, good power, and good signals, I was a very happy man. Matter of fact, I believe these are the first old school trilights I've ever shot, which was nice to be able to cross off my list. Sure can't complain about all that! My main goal accomplished, I had no other planned shots after Sheldon, making the rest of my KBS adventure another exercise in making things up on the fly. A fun way to do things, to be sure!
