Were you at the Great American Solar Eclipse of ‘24? Where were you during the Great American Solar Eclipse of 2024? I was at the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Jackson County, Indiana. Astrophotographers call this image "the diamond ring." Key in the opening music of Thus Spoke Zarathustra: "dum, Dum, Dummm, DA DUM!" I got it! I think photographing "the diamond ring"—which appears at just the moment after the total solar eclipse when the sun creeps its toe out; its corona appears in all its crown glory; solar prominences can be seen shooting out their red plumes, and my camera’s solar lens filter has been temporarily removed because the brilliant sun is covered by the moon–is my gate pass into the international astrophotographer's club, or something like that.

You know I can see you, right? There is no problem making out your shape, especially when you alert me to your whereabouts by chirping.
Great blue heron on the hunt The key to a successful meal for this great blue heron is to position itself ever so slowly, then stay as still as a log until the strike.
River Otter, Muskatatuck NWR After a day of looking for an otter family, this was the best I could get. This shy river otter liked staying in far away bushes and just wouldn’t get into the open that day. There was a fishing hole in the ice that was hidden by a tree. He'd emerge from the hole with a fish and have the time of his life eating the fish in these twigs or the back of a log. I have photos of him with his fish but this image was the most unobstructed one.
Even though you're motionless you know I can still see you; Right? A fox squirrel in a tree stared at me with his right eye. I knew that he knew I was there. I think the squirrel felt safely camouflaged if it did not move a hair. For several minutes, the poor little fellow didn't even blink. The squirrel stared at me and my big lens stared right back at him.
For everyone else, cash up front … preferrably in quarters
