On July 5, 1934, notorious bank robber John Dillinger and his gang made their way to Daleville, Indiana, to rob the local bank. The robbery took place at the Merchants National Bank, and Dillinger and his men made off with approximately $3,500 in cash.
During their escape, the gang stole a number of cars, including a 1933 Ford V8 Deluxe Sedan. This classic car would later be found abandoned in a nearby ditch, and would go on to become a part of Daleville history.
Today, the Daleville Classic Car Club holds an annual event to celebrate the town's history with classic cars, including the infamous 1933 Ford V8 Deluxe Sedan. The event typically features a car show, live music, and food vendors, and draws car enthusiasts from all over the region.
While the John Dillinger bank robbery run may have been a dark moment in Daleville's history, the town has since embraced its connection to the infamous gangster and the classic car that was a part of their escape. The Daleville Classic Car Club's annual event is just one way the town celebrates its unique place in American history.
