A plump of snow geese They were resting in the field. I think a curious hawk set them off. As each took to flight in panic at the sight of another jumping to the air, I could see the rise of a plump of snow geese that in places was so thick that the very earth in back disappeared.

A skein of snow geese I could hear them in the dark. But now in the first light of dawn, I simply needed to look above to see them. The sky had already filled with a skein of snow geese. How many had flown by when the sky was black? I don't know. But I do know that the early morning would see more. I certainly did. Much more.

Plump of snow geese on the increase This plump is just getting started. There will shortly be so many geese that join up that one won't be able to see the background. When a flock gets so thick that you can't see the background or make out individual birds, I think it should be called a flying blob rather than a plump.
