The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) is a non-profit organization located in Indianapolis, Indiana. Founded in 1830, it is the oldest and largest historical organization in the state of Indiana. Its mission is to “spark curiosity about the past, engage people in their history, empower individuals to make connections, and inspire a better future.”

IHS is dedicated to the collection, preservation, and interpretation of Indiana history. It has a collection of over 20 million artifacts, documents, photographs, and audio-visual materials related to the state’s history. It also maintains an extensive library of books, newspapers, and other publications concerning Indiana history.

IHS operates several museums and historic sites throughout the state of Indiana. Among them is the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, located in downtown Indianapolis. It houses the William Henry Smith Memorial Library, which holds the largest collection of historical documents and artifacts in the state. The Indiana State Museum, located in White River State Park, offers visitors interactive exhibits and educational programs about Indiana’s history.

As the state’s official historical society, IHS works to preserve and promote Indiana’s history through educational programming, publications, and research. The organization also sponsors public events such as lectures, traveling exhibits, and book signings. It works with other organizations to preserve and promote Indiana’s cultural heritage. IHS is supported by members, volunteers, and donations.
